World of Warcraft : Wowhead versus other databases
71There are many World of Warcraft itemdatabases available on the internet including wowhead, Thottbot, and Allakhazam. These databases have there upsides and downsides and I'd like to go over them quickly.
- Thottbot - This database was the original World of War craft item database. It was designed by a WoW beta player who goes by the name Thott. He designed a plug-in that allowed the players that installed it the ability to automatically upload item information to a central database. The database was later modified to include quest and class information as well. It is now owned by Affinity Media
- Wowhead - Also owned by Affinity Media, this database was famously bought by IGE's holding company for a reported 1 million dollars in 2006. Well, it seems to have been worth the investments since it is the number one World of Warcraft item database on the internet (probably not withstanding Blizzards own Armory).I like Wowhead because it is the cleanest looking database of them all. It flows quite nicely and is relatively easier to find things with.
- Allakahazam - Once again, owned by Affinity Media, this site has been around since the early days of Everquest. As such, it loads pretty fast but needs an overhaul as far as the layout goes. It's nice in that it's such a historic database, and probably the last decent Everquest database left on the internet. But as far as World of Warcraft goes, I still prefer Wowhead.
The Armory
Blizzard has it's own World of Warcraft database similar to Wowhead called "The Armory". Although technically still in beta, it has been available for quite some time.
The Armory, in my opinion, is technically superior to all the other databases as it allows you to search for characters based on name, realm, battlegroup, and guild. The problem is that The Armory is notoriously slow and prone to be down half the time. But hey, it's still in 'beta' so there's not much anyone can say at this point. If they can figure out the speed and stability issues, this will be the item database model for all future MMO's
